Equidistant from Martinique and Guadeloupe, independent since 1978, Dominica’s natural environment seems little changed since Christopher Columbus first landed there. It is the kingdom of divers and walkers, with its rich sea bed and untamed volcanic terrain, which includes the legendary Waitukubuli National Trail, the longest in the Caribbean (over 100 miles long). The Kalinago people first arrived on the island in the 14th century, naming it “Waitukubuli” meaning “his body is big.” Over 3,500 Kalinagos are still live here today and several of their traditions have been retained - the houses on stilts, their basketwork, their canoes and their music.
