When to go to the Faroe Islands?
Natural islands located in the north of the Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands have a climate of the oceanic variety ; cool in summer and rather cold in winter, without actually being freezing thanks to the beneficial effects of the Gulf Stream, which makes the air milder. To explore the islands in all their splendour, you should aim to do during certain seasons.
In winter, from December to March, maximum temperatures barely go past the 8°C mark, and yet don’t fall below 6°C. At night, temperatures reach 2°C on average, and rarely drop below 0°C. Starting in the autumn, and up until the start of spring, there is very little sunshine and the rain certainly does show up. The days are shorter than in summer and the wind blows along the coastline.
Between June and September, summer, despite often unpredictable weather, is still really the best season to go on one’s trip to the Faroe Islands. July and August are the hottest two months of the year and, even if the maximum temperatures don’t go beyond 13°C, there is a larger amount of sunshine than during the winter months and the rain is less frequent. During this season, it is however essential to remember to bring appropriate clothing for the rain as the sunny spells and showers can alternate between each other over the course of a single day. It is the ideal season for rambling among the steep cliffs and leafy nature, with invigorating air coming from the sea.
If you are a lover of nature and peace and quiet, don’t let yourself be discouraged by the particularly coastal, wet climate of the Faroe Islands. That is part of its appeal. Despite the coolness in the air, the summer season is genuinely ideal for exploring the beauty of these islands with their untouched wildlife, away from the noise of the modern world.
