When to go to Haiti?
With its tropical climate, Haiti is an island which enjoys a large amount of sunshine, with strong heat all throughout the year. It is one of the sunniest regions in the Antilles. To make a success of your trip to Haïti, it is preferable to go at the right time, when there is the least amount of rain and when the arrival of cyclones won’t spoil your stay.
Between December and March, the dry season starts. The rain is not heavy and essentially falls at night. The heat is regulated by trade winds which blow from the north-east. In Port-au-Prince, maximum temperatures swing between 25°C in January - the least hot month – and 30°C in March. The sea temperature remains warm with the water reaching the 26°C mark. The central plain of the island is arid, while the north coasts and the north-east slopes are less dry as they are more exposed to the wind and rain, as is the case at altitude.
From April to October, the rain season starts. The heat is slightly stronger, with temperatures which reach up to 32°C in the capital. The sky is often cloudless during these months, but fierce tropical storms can occur suddenly with short but intense rainfall, especially towards the end of the afternoon. The heat combined with the humidity makes the atmosphere heavy, and the air can be stifling and hard to bear. From July to November, the hurricane season starts, and these are particularly destructive.
Despite its sunny climate and constant heat, we recommend that you go during the dry season between December and March. You will be able to fully enjoy your holiday by avoiding the rain season starting in the month of May, but more importantly the hurricane season between July and November.
