When to go to Kyrgyzstan?
Located right in the centre of Asia, on a landmass almost exclusively made up of mountains, Kyrgyzstan has a climate which is continental, with especially harsh winters and very hot summers. Temperatures can therefore climb very high in the middle of the month of August, with up to 32°C in Bichkek, the capital, and can fall to -9°C in January.
In spring, more specifically from April to June, day temperatures vary between 19°C and 30°C, which is very warm, while the minimum temperatures swing between 6°C and 16°C. During this season, there is in fact a peak amount of sunshine. The month of May is the most recommended time to explore the country as it is during this time that the best temperatures for tourism are recorded, with an average of 25°C.
In summer, the effects of the continental climate can be felt, with little rain and average temperatures of 32°C. Summer can in fact be scorching depending on the location, but temperatures cool down little by little as soon as you go up in altitude and this is especially true at beyond 2,500m where it can even feel cold.
As is the case for spring, autumn is an excellent season to make a trip to Kyrgyzstan. September and October are months ins which the climate is mild, despite the cooler nights. The month of September is genuinely ideal, with average temperatures at 26°C and minimum temperatures of 11°C. During this month, there is a very substantial amount of sunshine and low rainfall, which presents a real advantage for those who wish to go trekking or take a swim in the mountain lakes.
Winter remains the least recommended season for a visit of the country. From December to February, the cold weather intensifies and the atmosphere dries out and becomes icy, with average minimum temperatures which can drop down to -9°C and maximum temperatures which don’t go above 2°C and this happens especially in the month of January, the coolest time of the year. Additionally, the hours of sunshine strongly diminish and winds from the north can be severe.
To have a pleasant stay in Kyrgyzstan and take full advantage of its wildlife and its spectacular landscapes, the two best seasons for exploring the country are still spring and autumn, with a firm favourite being the months of May and September, times at which the temperatures stay mild and more tolerable than those of the other seasons.
