When to go to Switzerland?
Although small in size, Switzerland is subject to different weather conditions according to its regions and altitude. Winters can be very harsh and summers are hot, especially in the country’s southern regions in July and August.
The climate of Switzerland varies according to the altitude and position of its valleys. The four seasons here are highly distinct. In the mountainous Jura regions and the Valais Alps in the south-west of the country, the climate is rather dry with mild summers and very cold winters. In winter, these regions are covered with snow and this makes skiers very happy. Skiing is one of the country’s main tourist attractions with luxury resorts such as Gstaad, Crans-Montana, Davos or Saint-Moritz. Further to the east, the climate is colder and drier. In the lowest regions, snow can be quite rare; this is true in Geneva where it is not uncommon to have no snow in winter.
In summer, Switzerland becomes the kingdom of hikers. Temperatures can reach 25°C in July and August. And for those die-hard fans of skiing, head to Zermatt, Europe’s largest and highest summer ski area where you’ll have the chance to ski in the mornings on its 21km of pistes. It’s in summer that there is the largest amount of rainfall, especially in the south of the country. Thunderstorms are also frequent in this part of the country, particularly at the end of the day.
In Switzerland, the ‘foehn’ blows – this is a hot, dry wind which generally blows in the spring and autumn. It can cause fierce gusts of winds in the northern Alps.
Switzerland can be visited all year round depending on what you want to do. For skiing lovers, go between November and March, and for hiking fans, the months from June to September are ideal for fine walks, not forgetting to mention spring and autumn where you can make the most of the good weather and take a stroll along the edges of lakes Léman or Tessin.
