Formerly known as Dahomey, this small West African country, independent since 1960, contains some of the continent’s greatest cultural wealth thanks to its forty ethnic groups and the diversity of their traditions. The birthplace of voodoo, don’t miss the Awilé festival in February, a ritual set to the rhythm of drums.
Sokbaro, is the highest point at 658 metres. Benin is essentially a land of savannah and, in the south, beautiful beaches. If you’re keen on safaris, the antelopes, baboons, elephants and lions in Pendjari National Park are a must-see. From Dantokpa market to the fishing village of Ganvie, along the slave route from Ouidah to Abomey and its royal palace, you will be surprised by the landscape and the activities this relatively unknown country has to offer. The welcoming population will greet you with dancing and music.
