Best time to go to Mexico

To effectively plan your visit to Mexico, think about the best time to go, taking into account the tourist seasons and climate.
Mexico benefits from a hot and humid climate all year round, especially to the south of the Tropic. The mountainous regions, however, have a temperate and dry climate with very cool winters. The best time to visit the country is from October to April, during the dry season, when tourist numbers are at their lowest.
When you decide to come will largely influence what you need to bring with you. Summer clothes or rainwear, parasols or umbrellas, it’s advisable to check the weather forecast to best decide what to pack in your suitcase.

If you are looking for authentic Mexican souvenirs to take home, then visit the Decomex shop in Guadalajara, which sells a range of traditional clothes, hammocks, antique pieces, upholstery and pottery. Consider buying mariachi musical instruments, a sombrero and a good bottle of tequila.

In Mexico, whatever the time of day or night, you can always be sure to find a restaurant open and at a price to suit you. If you want to try Mexican cuisine, try the local street vendors, market restaurants (available in in all towns and villages) or bistros offering fixed price traditional fayre. And don’t forget the chain and traditional restaurants that offer a range of international cuisine (Italian, French, Japanese) as well as "new Mexican cuisine", pizzas and fast food. Now you know where to eat, you need to know what to eat! Why not try the really spicy Poblano or Tabasco peppers; or a tortilla (a corn or wheat flatbread) which can be topped with meat to make a taco; or filled with chicken, cheese and a spicy sauce to make an enchilada; fried or cooked on a hot plate with a cheese, mushroom courgette and brain topping to make a quesadilla; fried with grated cheese, crème fraîche and chilli to make chilaquiles or even topped with chopped meat, salad, avocado and crème fraîche to make a tostada. Once seated at your table, you can enjoy one of the famous Mexican beers, such as Corona or la Sol, a refresco (fizzy drink) or a glass of agua fresca, a mix of cold water and fruit. If you fancy something alcoholic, don’t forget to try tequila, mezcal and pulque, or enjoy a coco loco, cucaracha, piña colada or margarita cocktail.
