When to go to Nepal?
Nepal’s climate is dictated by the monsoon. Generally, the dry season runs from October to May and the monsoon season from June to September. The lower Terai region has a tropical climate, while the valleys have a temperate climate - very different from the polar climate on the mountains. In order for your trip to Nepal to take place in the best conditions, it is important to be aware of the best times for tourism and trekking.
The monsoon season, from June to September is characterised by strong and violent rains that reach their peak between mid-June and the end of August. We do not recommend visiting during this period of heavy rainfall and intense heat. In September, the rains become less intense, especially in the valleys, and may not be experienced at all in the areas closest to Tibet.
The dry season, from October to April, is most recommended. This is the time when traditional festivals of Nepal take place. Sunshine hours are significant, air temperatures are pleasant during the day, with maximum temperatures on Kathmandu reaching 16°C in January, the coldest month. The months of February, March, April and November are the most pleasant, as temperatures become milder, with maximum temperatures reaching 24°C in April. For expeditions above 8,000 metres altitude, the months of September and October are preferable to the winter period from December to January, when the cold intensifies and when most of the base camp lodges are closed.
An excellent period for tourism and trekking, the dry season is preferablefor discovering Nepal. With a bright sky, and dry and sunny weather, you will make the most of the beautiful landscape. Avoid the monsoon period, especially from June to August, when torrential rains make the terrain and hiking trails slippery.
