When to go to Tibet?
The province has a generally cold, dry continental climate throughout the year. The geographical conditions of Tibet, characterised by regional changes in altitude, give rise to a variety of climatic conditions. Snow abounds on the southern border, close to the Himalayas, but the climate is more favourable in Lhasa (the capital). This city is the sunniest in China. Generally speaking, the region has four seasons. In autumn, the temperature gradually decreases to reach -9°C as the winter arrives. Tourism declines at this time, but the snow-covered landscape is a breathtaking sight. Moreover, it is in winter that the Tibetan New Year takes place, a unique cultural event during which every city is decorated in vibrant colours. In spring, the ice melts and the temperature rises. The summer period, although tainted by some night rains, is characteristically cool - ideal for hiking and enjoying the festivals.
